10 Uses for Castile Soap You Didn't Know About
If you've got a bottle of Castile soap tucked under your sink, you're holding one of the most versatile cleaning products nature has to offer. At Mountain Sky Soap, we've been handcrafting pure Castile soap in small batches since 1993, and over the years, our customers have shared some pretty creative ways to put it to work. Here are ten unexpected uses that might just change how you clean, care for your home, and even tend your garden.
1. Garden Pest Spray
Aphids, spider mites, and other soft-bodied pests don't stand a chance against a simple Castile soap spray. Mix one tablespoon of liquid Castile soap with a liter of water in a spray bottle, and apply it directly to affected plants early in the morning or late in the evening. It's a gentle, chemical-free way to protect your tomatoes and roses without harming beneficial insects.
2. Fruit and Veggie Wash
A few drops of Castile soap in a bowl of water makes an effective wash for removing dirt, wax, and residue from your farmers' market haul. Just give your produce a gentle scrub, rinse thoroughly, and enjoy cleaner fruits and vegetables. It's especially handy during berry season.
3. Dog Shampoo
Your four-legged friend deserves a bath that's gentle on their skin and free from harsh chemicals. Dilute Castile soap with water (about 1:3 ratio), work it into a lather, and rinse well. It's mild enough for regular use and won't strip natural oils from their coat. Just keep it away from their eyes.
4. Camping Soap
When you're out in the backcountry, Castile soap is your all-in-one solution. Use it for washing dishes, cleaning hands, or even a quick rinse-off in the lake. Because it's biodegradable and made from plant-based ingredients, it's a responsible choice for outdoor adventures. Just remember to use it at least 60 metres away from water sources.
5. Floor Cleaner
Add a quarter cup of Castile soap to a bucket of warm water, and you've got an effective floor cleaner for hardwood, tile, or linoleum. It cuts through dirt and grime without leaving a sticky residue, and your floors will dry with a natural, clean finish.
6. Makeup Brush Cleaner
Makeup brushes harbor bacteria and old product, but a gentle wash with Castile soap keeps them fresh. Swirl your brushes in a small bowl of diluted soap, rinse thoroughly, reshape the bristles, and lay them flat to dry. Your skin (and your makeup application) will thank you.
7. Shaving Cream
In a pinch, Castile soap makes a surprisingly good shaving cream. Wet your skin, apply a small amount of soap, and work it into a light lather. It provides enough slip for a close shave and leaves your skin feeling soft, not stripped.
8. Laundry Detergent
For a simple, eco-friendly laundry solution, add one-third to one-half cup of liquid Castile soap to your washing machine. It works well for lightly soiled clothes and is especially gentle on delicates and baby items. You might want to add a splash of vinegar to the rinse cycle to prevent any soap buildup.
9. Dish Soap
A squirt of Castile soap on a sponge or in your dish basin cuts through grease and food residue effectively. It's tough on dirty dishes but gentle on your hands, making it a great alternative to conventional dish soaps.
10. Car Wash
Mix a quarter cup of Castile soap with a bucket of water for a gentle, effective car wash solution. It won't strip your wax or damage your paint, and it rinses clean without leaving streaks.
Mountain Sky Castile Soap comes in eight scents and three sizes—475ml, 1L, and 4L—so whether you're trying it for the first time or stocking up for all these uses, there's a size that fits your needs. One bottle, endless possibilities.
