How to Make a Foaming Body Wash with Castile Soap

If you've ever stood in the shower squinting at an empty bottle of body wash, wondering how something that cost $14 ran out in two weeks, we have a solution for you. One bottle of Mountain Sky Concentrated Castile Soap makes up to seven and a half foaming body washes. Here's how to do it — and why it works so well.

WHY CASTILE SOAP WORKS IN A FOAM PUMP

A foam pump dispenser works by mixing soap with air as it's pushed through the nozzle. The result is a light, airy lather that feels rich on your skin but uses far less product per wash than a traditional liquid body wash. The key is using a soap that's fluid enough to pass through the pump mechanism, and concentrated enough that even a small amount actually cleans.

Our liquid castile soap is plant-based, made with olive oil, coconut oil, and Canadian canola oil. It's free from synthetic detergents, sulfates, and preservatives. That makes it ideal for a foam pump — it flows freely, lathers beautifully, and rinses clean without leaving residue on your skin or in the pump mechanism.

THE BASIC RECIPE

Filling a foam pump dispenser with straight castile soap won't work — it's too thick and will clog the pump. The trick is dilution.

Standard dilution (for body wash):

  • 1 part castile soap
  • 3 parts water

So for a standard 200ml foam pump bottle:

  • 50ml castile soap (about 3.5 tablespoons)
  • 150ml water

Fill the water first, then add the soap. Adding soap first and then water creates too many bubbles and makes filling messy. Gently swirl to combine — don't shake or you'll end up with a sink full of foam.

HOW MUCH DOES ONE BOTTLE MAKE?

Our 475ml bottle of castile soap, used at this ratio, will refill approximately 7.5 standard countertop foam pump bottles. Our 1L bottle stretches to about 16 refills. And our 4L jug? You'll be set for the better part of a year.

For reference, most commercial body washes are sold in 354ml to 473ml bottles and used undiluted. One 4L jug of our castile soap at a 1:3 dilution gives you roughly the equivalent of 42 commercial bottles of body wash — at a fraction of the cost and with zero synthetic ingredients.

CHOOSING YOUR SCENT

Our liquid castile soap comes in eight scents, each made with pure essential oils. A few that work particularly well as a daily body wash:

  • Lavender: Clean, calming, and universally loved. Good for all skin types.
  • Citrus: Bright and energizing — a great morning shower companion.
  • Peppermint: Cooling and refreshing, especially in warmer months.
  • Unscented: Ideal for sensitive skin, pregnancy, or anyone who prefers fragrance-free.

Because these are made with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance, the scent is subtle and fades quickly after rinsing — which is actually a feature, not a bug. You get a clean, fresh smell without competing with your deodorant or perfume.

A FEW TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS

Use distilled or boiled-and-cooled water if you want the longest shelf life. Tap water introduces bacteria that can shorten how long your mixture stays fresh. A well-made dilution with distilled water is generally good for two to four weeks at room temperature.

If you find the lather isn't quite rich enough, increase the soap ratio slightly — try 1 part soap to 2.5 parts water. Harder water can also reduce lather, so in areas with heavy mineral content, you may need a slightly higher soap ratio.

Keep your foam pump out of direct shower spray when not in use. Water getting into the bottle dilutes the mixture further over time and can throw off the ratio.

WHY THIS MATTERS BEYOND THE SHOWER

Every time you refill a foam pump instead of buying a new bottle of body wash, you're keeping one more plastic bottle out of the recycling stream — or worse, the landfill. Over the course of a year, one person making their own foaming body wash with a 4L jug of castile soap eliminates dozens of single-use plastic bottles. It's a small change that adds up quickly, especially if your whole household makes the switch.

We've been making concentrated castile soap in small batches in the Canadian Rockies since 1993. This is the same soap our customers use for dish washing, laundry, floor cleaning, and garden pest control — and it works just as well in a foam pump in your bathroom. One product, a lot of uses, and almost no waste.

Give it a try. You'll wonder why you ever bought body wash in the first place.
