Can I Wash My Hair with Soap?

blog Can I Wash My Hair with Soap

If you’ve ever run out of shampoo and reached for a bar of soap, you’re not alone. But is it a good idea to wash hair with soap? It might seem harmless to hair wash with soap, but regular soap can actually leave your hair feeling dry, tangled, and lifeless.

Let’s take a closer look at why — and what makes a pH-balanced, soap-free shampoo bar a much better choice for healthy, beautiful hair.

1. Can I Wash My Hair with Soap?

Technically, yes — you can wash your hair with soap, but it’s not ideal. Traditional soaps are made by combining fats or oils with a strong alkali, resulting in a product with a high pH level (around 9–10). While this alkalinity is great for cleansing your skin — removing dirt, bacteria, and buildup without harming the skin’s natural acid mantle — it’s far too harsh for your scalp and hair.

Your scalp’s natural pH sits closer to 4.5–5.5, and this slight acidity helps protect it from bacteria and maintain moisture. When you use soap on your hair, the high pH lifts the hair cuticle and strips away essential oils, leaving strands dry, frizzy, and prone to breakage.

That “squeaky clean” feeling? It’s actually your hair crying out for hydration.

The short answer? Soap is excellent for cleansing your living skin but not your hair — which is why we have created pH-balanced, soap-free shampoo bars that clean gently, protect your scalp, and keep your hair healthy and vibrant.

2. Why should I use a shampoo bar instead of soap?

Unlike regular soap, pH-balanced, soap-free shampoo bars are designed to match your scalp and hair’s natural acidity — around pH 3.67 to 5.5  — helping maintain healthy moisture, smoothness, and strength.

At Mountain Sky, our solid shampoo bars are soap-free, made with gentle, plant-based cleansers that remove dirt and oil without stripping your hair’s natural oil and moisture. Each bar is rich in botanical oils, vitamins, and proteins that nourish from root to tip — leaving your hair soft, shiny, and full of life.

With a pH balanced shampoo bar of about 6, our shampoo bars offer a gentler cleanse that supports your scalp’s natural balance, while added conditioners and proteins protect, detangle, and control frizz.

Pair them with our solid conditioner bars for extra ease in detangling, smoothness and hydration — the perfect eco-friendly alternative for anyone seeking a plastic free hair care routine that’s as effective as bottled shampoo, but better for the planet.

3. How do I use a shampoo bar?

Switching to a plastic-free hair care routine is one of the most rewarding changes you can make for the planet — but it does take a little time to adjust.

Our solid shampoo and conditioner bars from Mountain Sky are highly concentrated and made with many of the same nourishing ingredients found in bottled products — just without the 70% water and thickeners. That means a little goes a long way!

To use, simply rub the bar between your hands to create a lather, or glide it directly through your hair. Focus the shampoo bar on your scalp and roots, then let the rinse clean the rest of your hair.

Remember, over-washing can cause excess oil production, so you don’t need to shampoo every day. Once you’re done, store your bars somewhere dry, like a soap dish that drains water away.

Not only is the eco friendly shampoo bar perfect for home use, but they’re also ideal for travel — no leaks, no plastic bottles, and no issues with airport security. Every wash is a small act of love for the oceans, forests, and all the animals that share our world.

4. Is there a transition period for my hair when I start using a shampoo bar?

You may have heard about a “transition period” when switching to their products — whether it’s a natural deodorant or a shampoo bar. The idea usually comes with claims of your skin or hair “detoxing” from previous products. But here’s the truth: your skin and hair don’t detox. Your body’s natural detox systems are your liver, kidneys, and lungs — not your scalp or underarms.

For example, baking soda-based deodorants are often said to cause a temporary “detox rash.” In reality, that irritation happens because baking soda is highly alkaline and disrupts your skin’s natural acid mantle — the thin protective layer that helps maintain balance and prevent bacteria growth.

The same logic applies to soap-based shampoo bars. Because soap has a high pH, it can disturb your scalp’s natural acidity, leaving hair dry, rough, or waxy. This isn’t detoxing — it’s simply a pH imbalance.

We believe in transparency and gentle, science-backed care. Our soap-free shampoo bars are formulated to match your hair and scalp’s natural pH, so there’s no “transition” or adjustment period required. You might need a few washes to remove silicone or conditioner buildup from your old bottled products, but that’s just part of the normal cleansing process — not a detox.

You could use a clarifying shampoo bar at first, like our Citrus Dazzle Shampoo Bar. It will help remove buildup without stripping your hair. And because Mountain Sky shampoo and conditioner bars uses high-quality, plant-based ingredients, you can expect your hair to feel clean, soft, and balanced from the very first wash — no myths, no detoxing, just naturally healthy hair.

5. What is the difference between a shampoo bar and a conditioner bar?

A shampoo bar and a conditioner bar may look similar, but they play very different — and equally important — roles in keeping your hair healthy.

A shampoo bar gently cleanses your scalp, removing excess oil, dirt, and product buildup, while a conditioner bar restores softness, shine, and manageability after washing. Many of our bars are also enriched with natural oils, proteins to nourish your hair while you wash.

Conditioner bars are the perfect companion. Concentrated and pH-balanced, each bar replaces up to two bottles of traditional conditioner — minus the plastic waste.

Formulated with rich botanicals, natural emollients, and hair-loving nutrients, they help detangle, defrizz, and strengthen your strands from root to tip.

Together, Mountain Sky’s solid shampoo and conditioner bars form the ultimate eco-friendly hair care duo: gentle on your hair, kind to your scalp, and good for the planet.

6. Are detergents bad for my skin?

Detergents and soap are both classified as surfactants; they both have been created to lift grease and dirt into water so that stuff is washed away. Soap is a very simple product and has been around for thousands of years while detergents are a recent product (created during WW1).

Detergents have come a long way since the early detergents. Synthetic detergents are everywhere in our modern world, they are highly processed products. When ingredients are processed, the bigger the environmental impact, because processing requires more chemicals, more energy and more waste.

Yes – many commercial shampoos use harsh detergents (like SLS or SLES) that can dry out both your scalp and your skin. These ingredients strip away natural oils, leading to irritation, flakiness, and even breakage.

We don’t use sodium lauryl sulfate in our shampoo bars, we use sodium lauryl sulfoacetate because it is a gentle detergent at any concentration. Also, all of the detergents that we use in our shampoo and conditioner bars are derived from vegetable or nut oils and they are biodegradable.

With Mountain Sky Soap’s soap-free bars, your scalp stays happy, hydrated, and balanced — naturally.

7. How can I tell if a shampoo bar is soap-free?

The easiest way to tell is to check the ingredients. If you see “saponified oils” (like saponified coconut oil or olive oil), that means it’s actually a soap bar, not a shampoo bar.

Common ingredient listings for soaps: sodium palmate, sodium cocoate, sodium canolate, sodium olivate. The sodium in solid soap is from sodium hydroxide. You might also see a listing of oils that say they are saponified with sodium hydroxide.

True shampoo bars will list mild, science-backed cleansers such as: sodium cocoyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, decyl glucoside or coco sulphate, to name a few.
